ABOUT US

My name is Derek McIntosh, aged 68, and I am married with four children. My residence is in Manly in the Sydney metropolitan area, Australia.

I am the Register Coordinator.

I was born in South Africa, and I have been a lover of trees since my teenage years. In 1981 I immigrated to Australia. I recently retired, and hope to now fulfill my dream of creating the National Register of Big Trees for Australia. My background is real estate development, and this has given me an excellent business training.

I have no specific botanical knowledge of trees that equips me to undertake the task, but I do have a burning ambition to create this Register, and a strong administrative ability; this latter skill being a key component of this project.

I will form a team of experts that can advise on the botanical aspects of the nominated species etc. As part of this process, a nominated expert will coordinate the measurement on a regional basis, but only once the Register is populated with a fairly large number of trees.

Register ownership

The Register will not be owned by me. My goal is to create an Incorporated Association, or similar legal entity that will own the Register. Subscribers to this Association will be determined as the project develops. It could also be owned by an existing association, like American Forests owns the U.S.A. Register.

Office, administration, communications

The office will be at my residence. I am equipped with all the necessary office equipment, software and communication tools.

An ACT database has been created that has all the data fields necessary to record tree data, and related information. This database will also have contact details of organisations and individuals that have any dealings with the NRBT.
